Florida tops list of Bicycle Friendly Businesses
The League of American Bicyclists announced the newest round of Bicycle Friendly Business on Feb. 25 and once again, Florida has more than any other state.
“Across the country, businesses are getting creative in how they support people who bike, because their employees and customers are asking for it,” said Bill Nesper, executive director of the League of American Bicyclists. “From community gardens to medical centers to ice cream shops, Bicycle Friendly Businesses are showing that when you build biking into how you operate and how you show up locally, it pays off in healthier teams, happier customers, and stronger communities.”
Of the 1,117 certified Bicycle Friendly Businesses, 146 are in Florida. Arkansas comes in second place with 106 and Minnesota rounds out the top three with 93. To view a searchable index of all the Florida Businesses visit this link.
According to the league, states such as Florida, where outdoor recreation and bike tourism boost local economies, tend to have more Bicycle Friendly Businesses.
Businesses can apply to be part of the program and there are a number of criteria that determine if a business is accepted.
“Bicycle Friendly Business awards reflect local leaders’ ongoing work to build better places to bike and evaluate those efforts as part of a national movement.” according to the league. “Each of the five levels of the Bicycle Friendly Business award – diamond, platinum, gold, silver, and bronze, plus an honorable mention category – provides a clear path for businesses to continuously improve.”
